About

Mud on the boots,
not just plans on paper.

I'm John Garland, the builder behind Habit Earth Homes. This company didn't start in an office — it started on a piece of sagebrush land in the high desert of northern New Mexico, with a shovel, a pile of earth, and the conviction that a home should take care of its people instead of the other way around.

I've spent years building with the earth itself: raising earthen walls course by course, setting bottle bricks that light a room like stained glass, framing rough-sawn timber by hand, and running the whole build off-grid from a '79 VW bus topped with a kilowatt of solar. Living through blazing summers and sub-zero winters with these buildings taught me what actually works — and what's just theory.

That experience became the Thermos approach you see across this site: earth-sheltered, super-insulated homes that heat and cool themselves through nature's convection engine. No furnace, no compressor, no utility bill. Just a building that breathes with the land it sits on.

John Garland — Founder & Builder

Owner-Built & Proven

Every method we recommend has been tested with our own hands, on our own land, through real seasons.

High-Desert Hardened

Born at 7,000 feet, where the sun is fierce, nights freeze, and a building either performs or it doesn't.

Built With You

From first sketch to final plaster coat, you're a partner in the build — not a line item on an invoice.

From the Field

Life on the Build

A few moments from the land where all of this began.

Have land and a vision?

I'd love to hear about it. Tell me where you are, what you dream of building, and we'll figure out what the earth there can do for you.
